John Stones and Luke Garbutt have been named in a provisional 27-man England squad for this summer's European Under-21 Championships. Ross Barkley, who qualified for the age group but has 12 senior caps, is not included. The final squad for next month's tournament in Czech Republic will eventually be trimmed to 23 before meeting up at St George's Park on Monday 2 June. Gareth Southgate's side will then take on Belarus at Oakwell in a warm-up game before they fly out to their Euro base in Olomouc on Sunday 14 June. The Young Lions' first group game is against Portugal in Uherske Hradiste on Thursday 18 June, before they face Sweden in Olomouc three days later. The final group fixture against Italy takes place on Wednesday 24 June, again in Olomouc.

Why is it ok for John and Luke to play / get called up, but not Ross Barkley? Playing with players his own age might be a great confidence boost.

I can only think that this is down to form over the season. Garbutt was excellent when he got a game, Stones hardly had a bad game but Barkley has dissapointed far too often.
