Everton transfer rumours: Toffees want Thomas Vermaelen but Martinez rules out Roberto swoopA round up of Everton transfer gossip as the Blues are linked with a former Arsenal defenderFC Barcelona's new Belgian Thomas Vermaelen Everton are targeting Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen as a summer transfer target, that's if reports from Spanish newspaper Sport can be believed. The Belgian defender left Arsenal for the Camp Nou last summer, but has suffered an injury-hit campaign this term and has still yet to make his first team debut for the club. Vermaelen's struggles have led to reports that other clubs are interested, and Everton are said to be leading the chase and could take the defender on loan. Barcelona are said to be keen to let the 29-year-old gain some match fitness elsewhere. He made over 100 Premier League appearances for Arsenal before leaving for Spain in a £15m deal. One Barcelona starlet who won't be heading to Goodison Park is Sergi Roberto, after Roberto Martinez ruled out a potential deal for the youngster. Everton had been linked with a summer move for Roberto after taking Gerard Deulofeo on loan from Barcelona B last season, but Martinez says there's no deal on the cards for the 20-year-old. The Blues boss denied interest in Roberto, but did see that the Blues are scouting players for the summer. He said: "Yeah, always [we are looking at players]," he said. "As a football club you always do that, even if you are restricted by the windows. We have got a lot of people working and identifying the players that we need to help the players that we already have in place. "We have got a really special group of players. When we had to get results in the league, especially in the middle of a very busy period, we got those results and that shows the character and the focus of the group. "The talent of some of the younger players is something we can build around. For me, the dressing room is very, very strong as it is now so we need to make sure the business we do in the summer is to put us in a better place." By Joe Rimmer

2 Defenders linked to our club in as many days? If they have paid £15m how much is he worth, given that a club like theirs tends to over-pay for players?

If we were loaded I could understand it but Vermaelen is 30 this year and we can't pay that kind of money for an old player.

think that sentence is enough to deter us from wasting money on an injury prone never quite has-been
