We were simply not good enough to finish off a League 1 team. Far too often the final ball was pathetic, in Kone we have the black Brett Angell, a total waste of 6m who cant score in a brothel. Once again the defence fell apart and we conceded a soft goal, no idea what they were doing. When plan A fails (and thats being kind to Martinez suggesting he actually has a ***** plan) he has no idea how to alter it and relied on 2 kids to get him out of the shit. We got lucky tonight, the least they deserved was taking us to pens

I thought Stevenage deserved a draw, but at the same time, that just goes to show that we don't have the squad to use anything but a full strength eleven without risking an upset against a Div 1 side.
Barkley for me was excellent, and nice goal for the young lad too. Fellaini showed just how much we could do with keeping him though. I hope our board have a good think before letting him go, especially to a team who will probably take 6 points off us if we do.

Everton 2 Stevenage 1 (AET, 1-1 FT)Unsettled Fellaini is late hero as Baines is left on benchIn the end, it couldn’t have been anyone else. No Everton player has been spoken about more this summer than Marouane Fellaini and he had tongues wagging again on Wednesday night. But while all chatter up to now has been about whether the Belgian, who has been courted long and hard by Manchester United, will stay on Merseyside, this time Evertonians were simply happy to discuss his qualities after he spared them embarrassment against Stevenage. Battle: Stevenage's James Dunne (bottom) and Everton's Arouna Kone (top) battle for the ball After coming on as a 96th-minute substitute, Fellaini capitalised on some woeful defending to knock their League One opponents out and set up a trip to Fulham in the Capital One Cup third round. Everton had trailed to a Luke Freeman goal but got back into the game thanks to a virtuoso effort from Gerard Deulofeu, the game’s outstanding performer, in first-half injury time. Inevitably, though, the futures of Fellaini and Leighton Baines dominated the agenda. Roberto Martinez rubbished suggestions Baines has asked to leave but refused to comment on whether Everton have received a fresh offer of £38million for the pair from United. ‘I’m not going to entertain speculation,’ said Martinez. ‘We are still looking to get one or two bodies in. The two players have been true professionals, they are dedicated and working hard. I will be glad when the window is no longer open. I don’t want to concentrate on what is going on between clubs. There is nothing new to tell our fans. We are not going to feed speculation.’ Off the mark: Everton's Gerard Deulofeu celebrates scoring the equaliser, his first goal for the club Everton's Gerard Deulofeu (centre) celebrates scoring his side's first goal of the match with teammates Passion: A young Everton fan cheers on his team Martinez gave four players their first Everton starts, including his biggest signing of the summer Arouna Kone. The Ivorian, who has failed to score since his £5million move from Wigan, had the perfect opportunity to open his account in the 12th minute but, somehow, he contrived to miss from two yards after he was picked out by the exciting Deulofeu. The 19-year-old product of Barcelona’s La Masia Academy, who is on a season-long loan, came to Everton’s aid late in the first half with a sumptuous equaliser, bending in a left-foot drive to restore parity after poor defending nine minutes earlier had saw them fall behind. Freeman took advantage when Everton’s defence were, in Martinez’s words, ‘naive’ in failing to clear a long ball. Stunner: Stevenage's Luke Freeman opens the scoring Delight: Stevenage celebrate Freeman's goalNack of the net: Everton are unable to stop Freeman scoring Everton dominated possession in the second half but Ross Barkley and Deulofeu were the only ones who threatened to find a way through. As Stevenage shut up shop, hoping to get penalties, Martinez played his ace card. Fellaini made a difference as soon as he came on for Barkley, forcing a save out of Chris Day and missing a clear headed opportunity but he made amends in the 115th minute when he pounced after dreadful defending by Stevenage. Whether it proves to be his last goal in Royal Blue, however, remains to be seen. Source: Daily Mail
