Danielle Lea says Everton are fired up to kick off their WSL2 campaign with a win at Aston Villa on Wednesday night. The Blues are targeting an immediate return to the top flight of women’s football having suffered relegation at the end of the 2014 season. They face a tough curtain-raiser at the Sutton Coldfield Central Ground but defender Lea – a new face added over the off-season – believes the Toffees have what it takes to start off with a victory. “Everyone’s very excited,” she said. “It’s been a really long pre-season so we all cannot wait for the first game. “It is going to be a very tough game against Aston Villa but everyone has worked really hard. If everyone goes in with same positive mentality and we go out there and perform then I think we should win.” Everton head into the campaign knowing they have a bullseye placed firmly on their backs, having come down from the division above. However, learning to cope with the pressure that comes with being favourites for promotion is just another challenge Andy Spence’s side have to deal with. “We don’t have a choice – we have to start with a win,” added Lea. “Everyone in WSL2 is out to beat us. But, if we get our heads down and play our game, I think we will be fine. “Everyone here wants to get promoted, so that is our main aim this season.”

I like watching the women's games (on the odd occaision when they're televised). It's got little to do with the women themselves - honestly! - and a lot to do with the technical quality in the WSL and elsewhere. OK, it's not the same as the men's game but neither is it a pale imitation. It can have just as much 'blood & guts', just as much tactical interest, just as much skill.....but it's obviously evolving ( and quickly too) into a seperate and rather distinctive species of the game. I do wonder though, exactly why the sexes are totally segregated in the professional game. Match Officials can be either sex so why not the players? Not that we'd see a sudden influx in the PL but at every other level I think they would not disgrace themselves...and who knows? If teams are willing to throw immature male footballers into the maelstrom of senior football, why not mature females? Obviously there would be problems with Changing Rooms etc. and the sexual chemistry might take a bit of managing but these aren't insurmountable problems. The biggest problem is trying to talk about it without unintended double entendres......
