Unexpected setback for new head coach Tony Pulis as Jewell shocks Premier League strugglers, days after the club’s 1-0 victory overHull CityPaul Jewell has quit West Bromwich Albion after just a week, in an unexpected setback for new head coach Tony Pulis. Jewell has left his post as Pulis’s joint assistant in a shock development at the Premier League strugglers, days after the club’s 1-0 victory over Hull City. The former Ipswich Town and Derby County manager was only appointed last Tuesday but is believed to have expressed serious doubts over his role and officially departed today. Jewell had been headhunted by Pulis for his first position in club football for over two years to join Dave Kemp in a revamped Albion backroom team. But Jewell has spoken with Pulis extensively over the last 48 hours and decided to leave the Hawthorns, with Albion sources insisting there is no controversy behind his departure. Pulis will now look for a new assistant to work alongside Kemp. The 50-year-old, who had been working as a pundit for Sky Sports before his appointment, was scheduled to speak with local media on Tuesday but has left by mutual agreement. Albion are expected to make an official announcement over Jewell’s exit in the next 24 hours. Pulis is now stepping up his search for new signings, ahead of Monday night’s trip to Everton. He said: “We know what we want but it is going to be difficult because it is such a short window and a short space of time to identify the sort of players that we need to come in and make that difference. “If you start becoming complacent in sport or in life, if you take your foot off the pedal, you start going backwards. “This football club, they have to understand and recognise that to stay up, it's a massive dogfight and there are lots of clubs involved in it. We've got to start taking down the dust and getting out and getting things sorted.” By John Percy, Telegraph

Jewell is nobody's Poodle. Pulis is a bit of a control freak. No surprises here.

West Brom: Paul Jewell says exit was 'not by mutual consent' Paul Jewell has contacted his lawyers following his sudden departure from West Brom after just a week. Jewell left the Premier League club on Tuesday after being appointed assistant head coach by new manager Tony Pulis. West Brom said the former Bradford, Wigan and Derby boss, 50, had decided not to continue "his recent assistance on a more formal basis". But Jewell told BBC Sport his exit was "not by mutual consent" and the matter is now in the hands of his lawyers. BBC Radio 5 live's Midlands football reporter Pat Murphy says Jewell's departure is about money. "This appears to be one occasion when Jeremy Peace can't be blamed for a dispute over money at West Brom," says Murphy. "The chairman is a notoriously keen reader of a balance sheet but he left Pulis to sort out the hiring of his backroom staff within an agreed budget. "Pulis was very keen to enlist Gerry Francis after seven years together at Stoke and Crystal Palace. But to fund that, Pulis, his long-term assistant David Kemp and Jewell had to take a pay cut. "It seems Jewell, already wondering about the nature of his exact role at the club, wouldn't agree to that, although Pulis and Kemp did. Jewell says the matter is now in the hands of his lawyers."

Pulis and Budgets are an explosive combination. He's totally self-willed when it comes to spending other people's money. This could be very interesting....and no help in keeping them up (hooray!).
