Everton legend Weir poised to land first managerial job at Sheffield UnitedDavid Weir was last night on the verge of a surprise move into management with Sheffield United. The ex-Everton and Scotland defender emerged as strong favourite after making a late entry into the field. Weir is currently Everton's reserve team manager and was interviewed for David Moyes' old job ahead of Roberto Martinez being appointed at Goodison. There was talk of Weir following Moyes to Manchester United but instead, at 43, he is pursuing a first job in management. The Blades are impressed with Weir's cv and potential as they look to finally escape League One next season at the third attempt. They have been searching for a manager for eight weeks following the sacking of Danny Wilson late last season. Several early candidates, including Stuart McCall, Gareth Southgate and Karl Robinson, turned their back on the job with United set to slash their wage bill by a third. But that hasn't daunted Weir in moving ahead of previous favourites Rob Page, Wally Downes and Chris Morgan, who stepped up as caretaker following Wilson's axing. United are set to confirm their choice after the weekend. Source: Mail
