Ok. I get the impression a lot of fans aren't pleased with him and feel that for the price we paid he should be better but I'm going to defend him. I think there are a few factors that have contributed to him underperforming:
1. He was injured and played earlier than he should have so he wasn't 100% fit.
2. He's been asked to play a different way than he's used to. He's more-or-less playing as a target man. Personally, I don't think that is his game. He's better at running at people rather than holding the ball up and making flick-ons. I do think, however, that his hold-up play has improved and will get better over the years. I still think he could bully defenders a bit more but that will come. He doesn't look it and he's been around for what seems like forever but he's only 21 so lets be patient.
3. The whole team has been woeful there's been the odd spark here and there but no one has been consistent for one reason or another so singling him out is a bit unfair. I will say that I think he looks a bit out of sorts for someone who is supposed to be the focal point of our attack he hardly ever gets the ball and our midfielders aren't really looking to play him into space. I feel the team aren't playing him to his strengths.
I have faith he'll come good as long as the manager realises what he's good at and focuses on his strengths rather than his weaknesses.

He's young. Just because he cost a lot doesn't mean he is our number one striker though automatically. He is better when he is on a one v one in my book.

Lukaku is learning, and as much as we criticise it's best to forget the fee and remember he is a baby.
Strictly speaking, Everton aren't in the position to spend nearly 30m on potential, when the same money spent wisely could have gotten us 6 quality young players, but what's done is done.
Charlie Austin (25yo) for example cost QPR 4m on a 3yr deal. Pelle cost Saints £8m and so on.
The annoying thing about the Lukaku deal for me is that we sacrificed last season, in order to save up to buy him, and in Jan, we were 4th, and could have tried to win the title, nevermind try and get 4th, but we sold 2 strikers and a defender, and then suffered injuries, before bottling it near the end.

Basic principles of Centre Forward play is to have a touch and hold the ball up, for 28 million he can do neither, I get that he is young but doubt he'll ever have a touch or be able to hold the ball up in the future. It's something you can do or can't.
