Perhaps it's more an issue of the impossibility of two Refs. Assistants (Linesmen)seeing more than 25% of the action clearly. I've done my share of line running and with the best will in the world, you just cannot tell what is happening unless it is in the quarter of the pitch closest to you....and even then, it's tooeasy to be blind-sided by players between you and the incident. Four Linesmen would be the logical answer if the game isn't to be repeatedly interrupted by appeals to 4th Officials or technology.

I was doing the rather arcane course that the FA ran back in the 70's but after 3 seasons of hard work and sod-all else, I dropped it. It cut my playing time down too much aswell and THAT was enjoyable whereas the Linesman gig was pretty miserable.
