West Brom 0-2 Newcastle match report: Perez and Coloccini ensure the Magpies' winning streak continuesThe Magpies defended well, neutralising the Baggies' attacking threat and hitting them on the counter attack
Newcastle continued their recent resurgence with a fifth straight Premier League win at the Hawthorns, ensuring that talk of crisis is now a fading memory around St James' Park.
Prior to this game, Daryl Janmaat had spoken about the qualities of Alan Pardew, comparing him favourably with Louis van Gaal and Ronald Koeman.
The Magpies may still be some way behind Southampton, but victory today saw them stay level with Manchester United on 16 points after 11 games, and up into seventh, temporarily at least.
And the Newcastle manager had his right-back to thank for securing the points, after the Dutch international, who has previously worked with both Van Gaal and Koeman, set up both of his side's goals.
Ayoze Perez was reinstated into the starting line-up as a lone striker by Pardew after he came off the bench to score the winner against Liverpool last week.
New England star Saido Berahino said prior to the game that his attention was solely on playing for West Brom with Premier League big boys looming, but he failed to use his pace to any success in the first half, as the Baggies struggled to break down a Toon back-line which had only conceded one in their last four games before Sunday.
It was another young English striker who had the first real chance of the game.
Sammy Ameobi came close to bagging his second ever Premier League goal, after his strike at Tottenham a fortnight ago, but he saw his curling effort from 20 yards crash off the crossbar.
West Brom began to take control of possession, but could not find a way through the resilient Newcastle defence.
And on the brink of half-time, the recently-rejuvenated Magpies took the lead.
Daryl Janmaat burst down the right-hand side, as he has been accustomed to do since his summer move from Feyenoord, before playing a perfectly-placed low cross to Perez, who cheekily flicked the ball through his legs and into the far corner.
The strike is his third strike in as many games, as he has emphatically found his feet in the Premier League.
Alan Irvine will probably feel aggrieved his team trailed at the interval, but they gave Newcastle an early warning after the restart when a dangerous ball was whipped in for Anichebe who had run in behind, but it just evaded him and Tim Krul, who had come out to collect but missed it.
Luckily for Pardew and the visitors, there was no one running in at the back post for West Brom, but the Baggies had clearly been told during the half-time interval to move the ball forward more quickly.
They continued to probe forward, with Newcastle happy to keep their shape and press whenever the ball crossed the halfway line in an attempt to contain the threat, knowing that this new-look team has plenty of pace on the counter-attack.
And it didn't take long for the visitors to extend their advantage. After a set piece was cleared by the Baggies defence, Janmaat again turned provider when he picked up the ball on the right and put in an excellent cross that Fabricio Coloccini headed home from the back post for his first goal in three seasons.
West Brom could have found themselves back in the game with 15 minutes to go after Wisdom found himself clean through on the left with only the keeper to beat.
But from a relatively tight angle, he blasted it high and wide when he should have worked Krul at the very least.
Other than that, the Magpies continued to defend well, with Janmaat cementing his grip on the Man of the Match award after cutting out a wicked cross from Brunt, as West Brom struggled for invention in the opposition half.
In the final five minutes, it was Newcastle who went closest to scoring again, Perez forcing an excellent reaction save out of Foster after volleying first time from close range.
