Everton Ladies have been relegated from the top fight of women’s football after 21 years.
They lost 2-0 to fellow relegation strugglers Notts County on Sunday evening, leaving them rock bottom of the table and destined for certain relegation with two games left.
Andy Spence's side are yet to win a league game this season, although they did reach the FA Cup final.
He said: “I ask myself, could I ask anything more of my players? and the answer is absolutely not. They’ve given us absolutely everything this year and as manager I take full responsibility of the position we’re in of course, but I can’t ask for anything more of the players.
“We’re devastated. Certainly our ambitions was to think how high we were going to finish and I still had a strong belief throughout the season that our performances don’t reflect the position we’re in.
"We’re not a bad side by any means. Bad sides don’t get to FA Cup finals and bad sides don’t produce the level of performances we’ve produced in around 80 percent of the games this year.
"We have to start looking at next season. We’ve got some fantastic young players, who although wouldn’t have felt like it now, they will have learnt a huge amount from this season like myself so, given the opportunity, I want to ensure Everton are back in the WSL 1 next season."
