Everton boss Roberto Martinez wants to use Europa League as stepping stone for its bigger brother The Toffees coach says the club must be in Europe and wants that to mean the Champions League in coming campaigns  Roberto Martinez will use this term's Europa League campaign to prepare for ambitious Everton being in the Champions League in future. Martinez claims he is not upset at missing out on a top four spot last term as he says the Toffees were not ready for the Champions League. But he sees Everton's Europa League campaign, which starts on Thursday when German club Wolfsburg visit, as an ideal stepping stone. Toffees boss Martinez, whose side came fifth in the top-flight last year, insisted: “Everton has to be in Europe. “When I speak to the fans they have great memories of what they’ve done in Europe. “We have to work on a daily basis to get their consistently. “It is a priority for us. “I do feel maybe we were not ready for Champions League football, even though we fought hard to get into the top four. “Realistically we need to see how well we can do in the Europa League to see if one day we can get into the Champions League. “I do believe in process and progress and it’s the perfect next step for us to assess the squad and see how we react to playing in the Europa League. “It is a very important step for us and we really want to go all the way in the Europa League. “We’re excited because I do feel that playing against German teams, French teams, and Russian teams will bring a completely different tactical approach and we will benefit from that.” www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/everton-boss-roberto-martinez-wants-4267346#ixzz3DWORK1QC Follow us: @dailymirror on Twitter | DailyMirror on Facebook |
