Sean Dyche insists an improving squad mentality has been a key reason for Everton’s impressive recent form.
Sunday afternoon’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea represented a third consecutive Premier League win for the Toffees – a first for the Blues since March 2021.
Second-half goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and late substitute Lewis Dobbin sealed the win for Dyche’s men, and following the success, the Everton manager was keen to praise the effort on show from the whole Blues squad.
“Maximum effort from the players has got us a win and I think the mentality continues to grow here,” said Dyche.
“I spoke during the pre-season about the squad mentality. It’s not just about the 11. What about the group and the strength of the group? I think they’ve been tremendous, and I’ve just mentioned that to the players. The players outside of the starting 11 have been a credit, and so have the players playing.
“I thought Idrissa Gana Gueye was excellent. We only took him off because he’s put so much in recently. He just looked tired. Ashley Young has a niggly injury, but yet again, put the maximum in. Vitalii Mykolenko continues to develop. Dwight (McNeil) – we know about him. Jimmy Garner has just come out of illness, and you look at the effort he put in. Dominic Calvert-Lewin continues to get sharper.
“Another clean sheet and the two centre-halves and the goalkeeper are playing very well. I could mention everyone at the moment. I think their attention to what’s going on and their mentality to focus on the next challenge has been delightful for me as a manager to work with.”
The Blues displayed a strong defensive showing to earn a third consecutive clean sheet, while offensively, registering nine efforts and five shots on target during their clash with the London side.
Netting in stoppage time of the contest, Dobbin’s goal was his first senior strike for the Club, and Dyche admitted he was pleased to see the 20-year-old’s pop up with the late finish.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” he said. “It was a strange kind of game and tough for him as a young player. For him to score a goal and it was great to see the authenticity of his reaction to scoring.
“We have a group of people working very hard for a result. He runs off to the corner [to celebrate] and you watch the team; everyone runs over in a very authentic manner, just to enjoy the moment.”
Discussing his performances from across the season, Dyche added: “The form all season has been pretty good. The first three games of the season are absolute head-scratchers how you don’t win a game.
“But that’s football and you have to keep doing the right things all the time, and this group are learning how important that is. And they’ve done it today and got a reward for it against a very good Chelsea side.”

Chelsea's star forward Nicolas escaped punishment from the FA after being involved in a heated altercation with Everton's Nathan Patterson at Goodison Park on Sunday, according to journalist Matt Law.
The Blues suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League as they went down 2-0 against Everton. After the match, Jackson argued with the opposition player and even grabbed him by his throat in the heat of the moment.

Chelsea with all their spending but it's us that get deducted. May the 3 points keep coming. Hopefully we'll get them back. As time passes, it could be deemed as yet another tactical decision though, as they won't want to see us gate crashing Europe.
