Dyche Programme Notes
Good afternoon.
Welcome back to Goodison Park for what is an opportunity for us to really kick-start our season.
After a good performance with lots of pleasing elements against Fulham, it was disappointing we couldn't use the frustration of not getting what we felt we deserved from that opening game at Aston Villa last weekend.
We were a long way off the levels required to get points in the Premier League. It was a collective off day at Villa Park, which can happen, particularly early in the season, but it's something we have to learn from - quickly.
We made really positive strides in building a new mentality and consistency within the group in the final months of last season. It was disappointing, then, that a feeling of a backward step to our mentality to react to setbacks crept in and we let the game quickly get away from us after conceding the first goal.
I regularly talk about consistency and that includes doing the right things physically - both in and out of possession - and having a mental resilience to not let actions negatively impact the executions of our plan or overall performance.
We didn't do that last weekend. We didn't do the right things defensively or in attacking areas. We played standstill football and didn’t anticipate the game, something you simply cannot afford to do in the Premier League.
I thought aside from two of our substitutes - Arnaut Danjuma, who we can see is getting fitter and sharper after a minor injury, and Lewis Dobbin, who continues to build on an impressive pre-season - we were a long way short and we have to work to change that.
We analysed the game, took our learnings and swiftly moved our focus on to today's game, because this is a chance for us to respond - to show what we're about.
One performance doesn't make you a bad team, in the same way one good performance doesn't guarantee the next.
We have some quality players within the squad and the challenge is set now for us to show we've drawn a line in the sand in terms of not accepting any repeats of last weekend. It's time to show the resolve we displayed at the back end of last season and get back to building on the solid foundations we put in place.
I'd like to welcome Gary O'Neil, his staff, players and everyone connected with Wolves to Goodison this afternoon.
Wolves' opening two matches of the season have, perhaps, been similar to ourselves in that they began with a really strong performance but were ultimately left frustrated and then followed that up with a more hurtful defeat.
They will be hungry to respond to that setback, just as I expect our players to provide a reaction to last weekend's performance.
As always, my message to our players is to play on the front foot, be aggressive in the right ways and ensure they engage you, the supporters, to get Goodison at its passionate best.
As we enter the final week of the transfer window, I'd also like to assure you that there is constant work going on in the background as we look to shape our squad in the best way possible.
The parameters within which we are working mean we have to be extra astute with every incoming and outgoing and we will only bring in players who we collectively agree will improve what we currently have available to us.
Today all of our energy goes into producing a performance you can be proud of.
I wish to end my notes by reiterating that the thoughts of myself and everyone connected with the Club remain with Michael Jones' family, friends and colleagues after his tragic passing.
I visited the Bramley-Moore Dock site last week to lay flowers in Michael’s memory and I know there is a special tribute planned this afternoon to honour a fantastic person and a huge Evertonian. He will never be forgotten.

Tribute To Michael
Today, we will remember and celebrate the life of Michael Jones.
Like everyone, it was with the utmost shock and sadness that I learned of Michael’s tragic passing on the Monday after our opening game of the season.
On behalf of the Club, I would like to reiterate our sincerest condolences to Michael’s family, many friends, and colleagues, and remind them that he and they remain very much in our thoughts.
The tributes that have been paid to Michael are testament to the person he was - and the Evertonian he was. He was someone who was loyal and generous towards those he loved, and a Blue who followed his team unwaveringly home and away. He was rightly proud, too, to be playing his part in, and lending his talents to, the creation of our future home.
I have spoken personally with Michael’s parents, Elaine and Mick, to offer my deepest sympathies and extend on behalf of everyone at the Club our full support. I have heard many of Michael’s friends share their memories and was privileged to be given a real insight into the character Michael was.
I am honoured that Michael's immediate family have accepted our invitation to be here this afternoon and will join us as we all pay our respects to someone who truly loved his football club.
They are exceptional, loving people, and I can only commend the strength and bravery they have shown. As a father myself, I cannot begin to comprehend their loss. I hope, however, they gain some solace from joining us in remembering Michael this afternoon, at a place that was clearly so special to him.
Michael’s girlfriend, Hannah, and her father, Rob, are both matchday employees here at Goodison and our thoughts and support, of course, extends to them.
It has been evident in the past 12 days that Michael’s passing has been felt by our entire fanbase, and beyond. That was clear from the scenes last Sunday at Villa Park and 24 hours earlier at Anfield. I would like to thank the management, players, staff and supporters of Liverpool Football Club for the thoughtful and touching way in which they paid their respects to Michael, proving as always that this city’s football family is one that unites in the toughest of times.
Such was Michael’s love of Everton, he made connections across the fanbase - be it from travelling the length and breadth of the country to follow the team, or flying as far as Australia as he did just last November. Many fans in attendance today will have met Michael. Many of you will not have known him personally but will have shared away ends or celebrated goals and victories here at Goodison alongside him.
Michael’s passing has impacted us all. And that is why I ask you to join us in applauding his life today, before kick-off and again when the clock reaches 26 minutes.
Beyond this afternoon, we will continue to work with Laing O’Rourke to create an appropriate and lasting memorial for Michael at our new stadium, the details of which will be agreed with his family and communicated publicly when the time is right. He will never be forgotten.
Indeed, as the banner fans held aloft at Villa Park last Sunday rightly stated, Michael Jones will be forever in our hearts.
May he rest in peace.

I'd say judging from Sean's answer that Branthwaite probably isn't likely to be starting. He deflected attention away from him but how is a kid that age effected by a few lost weeks when he's played in a tournament? His comment about Harry Kane didn't go down with the fans. That's just our fans being overly sensitive.

What does Godfrey offer our squad? Why not sell him and buy a defender, or play him in DM? I can see Branthwaite being sold to help pay for a forward if honest.
