Carlo Ancelotti says Everton must produce a “perfect” performance to get the better of Liverpool in Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie at Anfield.
The Blues boss welcomed the “fantastic opportunity” for his team to overcome their Merseyside rivals and called for hard work, intensity and to play without fear to create a complete display.
Sunday’s tie marks Ancelotti’s first Merseyside derby since he became Everton manager last month but the Italian is no stranger to taking on Jurgen Klopp’s team, having beaten Liverpool in the past two seasons in the Champions League when he was in charge of Napoli.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity,” said Ancelotti. “It will be difficult, this is normal, but you can do your best only if you are focussed and playing without fear.
“The best way to approach this game is to be focussed on what you are going to do on the pitch and nothing else. How you have to defend and how you have to attack.
“You have to produce a great performance, a normal performance is not enough against them. Everything has to be perfect – no mistakes, work hard, intensity – the game has to be complete.”
As a player, Ancelotti tasted both the Rome and Milan derbies, and has experienced rivalries in the dugout including El Clasico when he was Real Madrid manager.
The Italian also knows the proud history of the FA Cup, having won the trophy with Chelsea in 2010. And he is hoping that run in the competition proves a good omen for Everton this season.
“Every derby is really important for supporters,” added Ancelotti. “I played games in Rome, Milan – I know how different these games are.
“We need to have confidence to play at our best, try to play our football and move on in a competition everyone knows how important it is.
“The first time I was involved in this competition I won it so hopefully that is good luck for us!”
