Everton's Algarve Football Cup opener against LOSC Lille headed to a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.
Both sides hit the woodwork in the first half, with the Blues' closest effort coming from Sandro Ramirez after an inch-perfect long pass by the impressive Muhamed Besic.
The stalemate after 90 minutes left both sides with a point - but a penalty shootout followed, not to decide the match but to count towards goal difference in the event any of the three teams involved in the competition finish level on points.
It means a two-goal victory over Portuguese champions FC Porto on Sunday evening would see Marco Silva's side lift the pre-season trophy.
