Everton have been drawn to face Barnsley, Bradford City and Oldham Athletic in the group stage of the 2018/19 Checkatrade Trophy. The Blues, one of 16 invited Category One Academies who have entered an Under-21 side to compete against clubs from League One and League Two, are in northern group F. The format for this year’s competition is much the same as in 2017/18, with only two notable changes to the regulations. Players from EFL clubs who are out on loan in the National League and below are now eligible to feature, while the 16 invited teams have been restricted to fielding two players over the age of 21 and more than 40 first-team appearances. The invited clubs will again play all their fixtures away from home. Barnsley enter the competition having been relegated from the Championship last term, while Bradford City head into the campaign looking to build on last season’s 11th place finish in League One. Oldham Athletic finished 21st in League One in 2017/18, ending their 21-year stay in the division. Dates and kick-off times for Everton’s Checkatrade Trophy fixtures will be confirmed on evertonfc.com in due course.
