Wayne Rooney is continuing talks with Everton and D.C. United over his future, with sources telling ESPN FC that discussions are progressing with all parties and options remain open.
Rooney and D.C. United have been in talks for over a month as the MLS club attempt to persuade the former Manchester United and England captain to move to the United States.
The 32-year-old met with senior figures of the Washington-based franchise last month and a deal has reportedly been agreed in principle with the club, who are currently lying at the foot of the Eastern Conference.
But with 12 months still to run on his contract at Goodison Park, and the option of a third year, there remains a possibility that Rooney will stay with Everton.
New manager Marco Silva stopped short of clarifying Rooney's situation when he was unveiled as Sam Allardyce's successor earlier this week, with the former Hull City and Watford coach insisting that the player's future lay in his hands.
"In the next few days we will talk with Wayne Rooney because he is a club legend and we need to understand everything," Silva said. "The door is open every time for him. We will talk with him, but it is Wayne's decision."
Rooney is not due to return to preseason training at Everton until the beginning of July -- the same time as the re-opening of MLS' transfer window.
Having scored 11 goals in 40 appearances for Everton last season, Rooney ended the campaign as the club's top scorer and sources said that both parties are open to the player remaining at Goodison next season.
Rooney and his advisors are still in discussions with both clubs, however, with the player in no rush to make a decision on his future.

Wayne Rooney has taken another giant step towards moving to America - with a trip to Northern Ireland. The paperwork will be required if he decides to switch from Everton to MLS side DC United.
Rooney, England and United’s record goalscorer, was seen with agent Paul Stretford outside the Consulate being picked up in a chauffer driven black Mercedes.
There was no sign of wife Coleen, who has always been supportive of his career and is expected to join Rooney with their children if he signs for the Washington based team.
The former England captain has already discussed personal terms with DC United who will have provided much of the paperwork required for his visa, but discussions continue between the player, Everton and the American club. If he decides to move across the Atlantic it will mark the end of an era for the 32-year-old striker after 16 years in the Premier League.
He flew to Washington last month to look around the club although a source told the Washington Post: “By no means is the deal done but it is a step in the right direction.”
Rooney would not be eligible to play for his new club until July 10 when the American transfer window opens.

Rooney forced out
It seems as though Wayne Rooney will indeed be on his way out of the club this summer, but he is not overly happy about it.
The England legend has an agreement in place with DC United over a move to Major League Soccer. The Mirror claim he has a three-year deal with the club but that he never truly wanted to leave Everton this summer.
Instead, he feels he is being forced out of the club by the new management who feel he has no future at Goodison Park.

I thought he'd be the one to step up to the plate when everyone else wasn't pulling their weight but he just didn't seem bothered. Didn't want him in the first place so glad he's going.
