The Blue Girls suffered their first defeat in the Continental Cup this season – having won their opening two matches – after a battling display at the Academy Stadium. The home side went ahead through an Izzy Christiansen header, but Everton were back on level teams in the second half as Simone Magill nodded home. City grabbed their winner 10 minutes from time through ex-Everton forward Nikita Parris. But despite the loss, Spence was encouraged by his side’s display. “For what I want out of this team and where we are going, I think we are in a great place,” he said. “I’ve not been this excited about an Everton team in a long, long time because they are babies playing against senior internationals. “I thought we were great in the second half. We came out, played some football which was great to see, City created chances but, so they should, they’re at home and they needed to win the game. We scored a great goal with a fantastic header by Simone. “We couldn’t hold onto that point because that would have been a really good result. We are disappointed with the result but there are a lot of positive things to take away from the week as a whole.” After a tough run of opening fixtures in WSL 1, Everton are yet to pick up a point after four league matches but will be eyeing victory when they travel to bottom side Yeovil on Saturday (3pm kick-off). “It’s great for us to be competing so there are lots of good things to build on,” said Spence. “We’ve got a full week now to prepare for Yeovil and we will keep pushing hard to focus on that. “We did not fear anyone in this league. Football is about 11 v 11 and we had 11, plus the subs who came on, who put everything into it against City which is all I can ever ask for. “Lots of good work has gone and I know we’re not far off!”
