Phil Jagielka says every member of Everton’s squad must prove their worth to stay in Ronald Koeman's plans. Romelu Lukaku’s 25th Premier League goal of the campaign was not enough to prevent a 3-1 loss at Arsenal on Sunday, as goals from Hector Bellerin, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey earned the Gunners all three points on the final day of the season. Speaking after the game, the captain was frustrated Everton could not take advantage of their numerical advantage after Laurent Koscielny was sent off in the 14th minute for a reckless challenge on Enner Valencia. And Jagielka says attentions must now switch to preparing for a busy 2017/18, with the Toffees set for a return to European action. “Coming to a place like the Emirates, these are the teams you want to be competing with week-in, week-out,” he said. “There’s no such thing as an end-of-season game that doesn’t mean anything. “It’s not always easy against 10 men. They took gambles and we should have taken advantage of that. We put many crosses in and, for whatever reason, we took another touch or a bad touch or just made the wrong decisions. When there’s only a one-goal lead, things are a little bit harder. But, unfortunately, they then scored a third goal in injury-time. “We’ve got a pre-season to prepare for next year and players want to put down a marker to be part of the manager’s plans. I’m not sure that was the case for every single one out there so that’s perhaps something we need to address.” After two successive 12th-place finishes, Everton headed to north London knowing seventh - and a place in next year’s Europa League competition - was guaranteed. While satisfied with a season of progression, Jagielka believes Koeman will truly put his stamp on the squad this summer. “Seventh is good but we always want to aim higher,” he added. “I think it’s a great place to build from. If we’d played to our potential, we could have been in the hunt for the other places but seventh is a decent climb from the places we’ve been in the previous seasons. “It is progress but there’s still a bit of a rebuild to go. We’re going to need a little bit of a bigger squad next season with European football so we’re far from the finished article but it’s nice to get back up in the top half of the table. It’s something for us to build on for next season.” Everton FC

Surely Jagielka must understand it's his place that is one of the positions we need to sign somebody for.

We can only have a set amount in a squad though, so can we keep hold of players who don't cut it? We do that too much at Everton. I thought this might fit here, as it shows how badly Everton lack goals in midfield: League Goals scored from Midfield: Liverpool - 64 Arsenal - 52 Spurs - 49 Chelsea - 43 ManCity - 37 ManUtd - 23 Everton - 18

He's been a very good player for us but we need to move on.
