Everton Ladies 1 – 0 DurhamGabby George nods Blues to victoryGabby George headed Everton to victory against Durham as they leapfrogged the Wildcats to go top of the WSL 2 Spring Series table. The Blue Girls know two wins from their final two games will seal the title, after George headed in from Dan Turner’s inswinging corner on 13 minutes. Simone Magill twice missed good chances to double the lead – Rachael Laws saving one-on-one on 34 minutes before Magill somehow hit the bar from Claudia Walker’s cross moments later. Magill then headed on for Walker to race in on 36 minutes, but Everton’s top scorer was denied by Laws’ outstretched foot after sending the keeper the wrong way.Walker turned provider again on 52 minutes, pulling back for Mollie Green, unmarked in the middle, but Laws was out quick to save again. Zoe Ness came closest to levelling for Durham, meeting Beth Hepple’s 59th-minute free-kick with a powerful header, which Kirstie Levell saved one-handed. Rachel Lee then turned onto Becky Salicki’s deep free-kick on 65 minutes to fire in left-footed, but again Levell was equal to it.Captain Sarah Wilson thought she’d levelled in stoppage time, following in after Hepple’s free-kick hit the post, but the offside flag saved Everton. George: Let's Keep Momentum GoingGabby George insists Everton Ladies are only focused on the next game, as they prepare to take on Watford at Goodison Park. The Blue Girls picked up a vital 1-0 win over fellow Spring Series title challengers Durham Women at the Select Security Stadium on Sunday. Defender George netted the first-half winner, nodding home a corner to secure a crucial three points in the race for the title. While she was delighted to get on the scoresheet, George insists all eyes are on maintaining the strong form that has seen the Toffees lose just once in seven Spring Series games when they head for the Grand Old Lady. “It was nice to score the winner but it is the three points that matters,” she told evertonfc.com. “We all wanted the win but to pop up on the scoresheet was nice. That’s my first of the season – but I’m a defender first and foremost! “We have been practising a lot on our set pieces. We are looking to improve on those because we knew it was area where we could get better, both defensively and offensively. “You can see the results – last week against Brighton, Georgia Brougham scored and I’ve done so against Durham. “My goal helped secure a big win for us. In every game we play in we want to take the three points and this one is another win on the board for us. It’s another positive result that helps build our confidence and now we want to take that on into next week. “In the first half, we played our football and showed everyone what we can do. But in the second we had to really work hard to defend the lead. It was great for us to show we can do both facets of the game.” The introduction of Fern Whelan for her second Everton debut following her free transfer return to the Club last week also saw George reunited with her former teammate. Whelan was in the side when George burst into the senior squad as a 17-year-old and she is pleased to see the experienced former England international re-join the Blue Girls. “Fern is a great player on and off the pitch,” added George. “She brings a lot of experience to the group and she can come in and show us what she has got. She will be a big help to us in WSL 2. “Both her and Aileen Whelan are two really good signings for us. Aileen was a threat when we played against her when she was at Notts County and she actually scored in that game at Goodison. So we have added a goal threat to an already strong forward line with Simone, Claude and Mollie. “We knew we needed to strengthen from last season because we didn’t achieve what we set out to do. We have now done so in quite a few positions so hopefully we can help them gel, bring the squad together and get the job done.” The Ladies face Watford at Goodison Park next on Sunday 14 May, in aid of Everton in the Community’s Home Is Where The Heart Is campaign. Kicking off at 2pm, fans are being encouraged to turn up and support the Ladies’ team for free and make a donation towards EitC's fundraising drive. Everton FC
