Everton Ladies are delighted to announce the signing of striker Aileen Whelan and the return of former Blues defender Fern Whelan. The pair arrive on free transfers after Notts County’s liquidation in WSL 1 and will go straight into the squad to face Durham at the Select Security Stadium on Saturday. Defender Whelan spent nine years at Everton after joining from neighbours Liverpool in the summer of 2005. Her form at the heart of the Toffees’ defence throughout the 2007/8 campaign saw her named FA Young Player of the Year, and she earned senior England honours when making her debut in a 2-0 win over Sweden. Her former Notts teammate Aileen Whelan spent three years at the Lady Pies, joining ahead of their maiden season in the WSL. Prior to that she had turned out for Rushden & Diamonds, Barnet, MK Dons and Nottingham Forest. While at the latter, she competed at the World Student Games, winning the gold medal, while internationally she has represented England at Under-23s level. Both players trained with their new teammates on Friday and could make their Everton debuts on Saturday. Manager Andy Spence was delighted to bring in the former Notts duo. “It’s brilliant to see Fern back at Everton,” he said. “As our fans will know, she was a big part of Everton Ladies for a number of years, and has been a fantastic servant to the club. “To have her now back at the club is absolutely unbelievable for us. I am so pleased to have her with us once again. “I have reminded Aileen already that she scored against us not so long ago! First and foremost, she carries that goal threat. But she is creative as well and really clever in terms of her movements. “I am so pleased to have added both Fern and Aileen to our squad and I am looking forward to working with them.” Everton FC

'I Can't Wait To Play'Aileen Whelan hoping to make Toffees debut as soon as possible.Aileen Whelan cannot wait to make her Everton Ladies debut after signing for the Blue Girls on Friday. The striker was left without a club after Notts County folded the day before they were due to begin their WSL 1 Spring Series campaign. That means Whelan has spent months in pre-season without tasting competitive action so far this season, meaning she is chomping at the bit to get started at her new club. “I’m really looking forward to getting started,” she said. “I have had a long pre-season and I am just looking forward to getting out onto that pitch and getting some minutes under my belt and score some goals. “I have always heard good things about Everton. I have played against them a few times and there is definitely a good squad here. I have heard a lot through previous players who have been at the club as well. “Andy was also on the phone to give me a feel about what everything is about and plans going forward. Having Fern here too will help. She knows the place and some of the players. It was nice to know through her what I was coming into before I got here. “Everything sounds promising and there is definitely a good vibe around the place.” Whelan, and indeed fellow new recruit Fern Whelan, could make their debuts on Saturday when the Toffees take on Durham at Select Security Stadium. She is looking forward to adding her game to the blend of attacking options within the squad. “I am versatile, so I can play along the front line,” she added. “I like to be direct, to try and get in and around the box to try and score goals. “Hopefully I can make my debut as soon as possible. There are three games left so I am just looking to get as many minutes under my belt as I can.” Everton FC
