5-0 is a bad start. They lost their first game last year but to lose by that much to an American team is a bit worrying.

The biggest challenge for us in the first few days is to allow the boys to adjust to the time difference and the weather. So it’s all been about allowing the body and the mind to acclimatise. We have tried to do that by getting them out early, like today going for a walk before breakfast to get some fresh air and to wake the brains up. After breakfast we have managed to have a couple of training sessions, involving time on the ball, which they enjoy. The second session was more about preparing for the upcoming games. We have to be a little bit clever with the timings for training because of how hot it can get. The length of the sessions is probably shorter than what we would do back home but that’s part of the challenge they will have to adapt to. We have tried to be sensible and it is about making sure they get enough time with the ball but then not overworking them physically. But the boys have been fantastic with that so far. They are adapting quickly, in good time for our first game against Dallas, and you do get the feeling they are ready for the next 10 days or so. For me, I have had a few tours with Everton but this is my first taste of the Dallas Cup. I have been lucky enough to visit some incredible places – Russia, Qatar, various European countries – but I feel very fortunate to come here and experience this country and this competition. Today, myself, Sheeds and Taity had the opportunity to go and watch FC Dallas play Minnesota, who are coached by Adrian Heath. Sheeds went to go and see Inchy last night as well to catch up. For us, it was great to sample a little bit of the MLS and local football ahead of our tournament starting. As a coach, it is always good to watch different styles of football and different levels. So far, it has been a great experience for the players first and foremost but the staff certainly appreciate the opportunity they have got as well. I’m sure there are one or two people who would swap for the job I have!

We started day three here in Texas at 9 o’clock with breakfast, before having our team meeting for our first game against FC Dallas. We went through some clips on how they attacked, how they defended and what to expect from their set-pieces. Our game was at midday so it was quickly back to our rooms to get changed and to grab our boots and gear. We then travelled to the Cotton Bowl and as soon as we got there the lads went to have a look around the pitch. The stadium was massive and the surface was in really good condition. I have been lucky enough to play at some really big and well-known stadiums but the Cotton Bowl was one of the biggest I have played in. There was a decent crowd there and it was a confidence booster to see how many people turned up to see us play. Unfortunately the game didn’t go our way but for all of us, especially those who haven’t gone to Dallas before like me, it was good to get out there and see what it was about and get started. We played better in the second half but the damage was done by then. For me, it was great to get onto the pitch, despite the result, and hopefully I can make an impact in the next game against Maccabi Haifa. That is who we play later today. We all want to bounce back from the defeat to Dallas. We know the team that came out here last season lost their first game but went on to win the tournament, so hopefully we can do the same. We are a good group of lads. We are disappointed with the result but we will stick together.
