Everton in the Community recently welcomed representatives from FunCAP, the charitable arm of Clube Atletico Paranaense, to L4 as part of a knowledge sharing partnership between the two organisations. EitC Executive Director Phil Duffy and Health and Wellbeing Manager Johnnie Garside led the visit to Liverpool from the Brazilian football club and during their stay, both parties discussed and exchanged technical know-how on how to execute educational and social development projects to diverse areas of their local community. Back in December 2016, Johnnie visited Brazil to assist in the delivery of the Premier Skills Community Coach training programme which is in partnership with the Premier League and British Council. During the visit, he met with representatives from FunCAP who are local partners to Premier Skills, presented the pioneering work of Everton in the Community and explored potential collaboration opportunities. After being so impressed by the breadth and impact of the work of EitC, just two months later senior representatives Claudia Sovierzoski and Roberto Bonnet from FunCAP made the 5,490-mile trip to Liverpool to see first-hand the work of Everton’s official charity and meet with EitC representatives and Club ambassadors. The trip took the form of a fact-finding mission for Brazilian colleagues to better understand the principles of designing and delivering educational and social development projects to diverse community groups. Launched in late 2016, FunCAP is the first charity attached to a professional football club in Brazil and a perfect partner for EitC as both organisations pride themselves on leading change and operating with shared values. FunCAP’s thematic pillars focus largely on education and social areas and while in Liverpool, the delegation were shown around Everton Free School and Sixth Form College to see lessons being delivered as well as looking around the recently-opened People’s Hub on Spellow Lane to find out more about how it benefits the local community. Upon agreeing terms, a two-year knowledge sharing partnership has now been agreed which is the first of its kind between club community departments and is an expression of EitC’s commitment to broaden its global reach. The partnership links together EitC colleagues with their Brazilian counterparts, creating platforms for interaction, connectivity and meaningful dialogue to support project development, provide guidance and share resources, as well as providing technical know-how for staff. This mutually beneficial partnership supports the vision and objectives of both parties by centring on extending a hand of friendship between countries to raise standards of community development through football and sharing best practice across continents. Johnnie Garside will be responsible for the management of the partnership and, speaking after the visit, said: “This partnership represents a significant moment within EitC’s history as we look to explore how our expertise, models and the lessons we’ve learnt over the last 29 years of the charity can be used to benefit and positively impact even greater numbers of communities worldwide.” Everton FC
