Romelu Lukaku starts and Leighton Baines is handed his 300th Premier League appearance for Everton as the Blues remain unchanged for the visit of Sunderland. Lukaku travelled to visit doctors in Belgium last week due to a calf problem but was always expected to feature against the Black Cats, while Baines becomes only the second full-back in the Club’s history to reach a triple-century of outings in royal blue. Former Everton boss David Moyes has named two ex-Toffees in his starting XI in Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo, while another, Joleon Lescott, is among the subs. Ronald Koeman’s decision to stick with the same side that earned a goalless draw at Middlesborough last time out means goalkeeper Joel Robles is again protected by a defence of Seamus Coleman, Ashley Williams, Ramiro Funes Mori and this afternoon’s skipper, Baines. Ahead of them, Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gana Gueye sit behind a front four of Tom Davies, Ademola Lookman, Ross Barkley and Lukaku. Should Lukaku, scorer of a hat-trick at the Stadium of Light earlier this season, net against the Black Cats today he will equal Duncan Ferguson’s Club record of 60 goals. Speaking ahead of the clash, manager Koeman said: “It’s never easy [to choose the starting XI] because we have competition in the squad, we have some players like James McCarthy and Kevin Mirallas back from injury but, on the other side, I did not have reasons to change the team. “We know the situation of Sunderland. They will defend and wait for chances on the counter-attack. We know one of their big threats is Jermain Defoe - and he is dangerous in those situations. “But we will have a lot of ball possession and it is all about whether we can play at a high tempo, press well and, force them to make mistakes, win second balls and create chances to score goals.” When asked about Baines reaching 300 Premier League appearances for the Club, the Blues boss added: “It is a lot of games. He’s a very important player for Everton and he’s shown his qualities since I arrived. I think he’s been one of our best players this season.”
