Belgium’s HLN say nobody thought it was possible a week ago, but today Ishak Belfodil was available for Standard Liege to play against Club Brugge. Belfodil had been on the verge of a move to Everton, with a transfer being expected, rather than simply rumoured. The player’s agent had been at Standard’s winter training camp in Spain, waiting for the message to travel for an Everton medical. The agent was there for four days, and the message didn’t come. In the end the Everton deal collapsed, with a few factors being blamed and perhaps the real reason still unknown. Standard manager Aleksandar Jankovic couldn’t speak highly enough of his player and his reaction to the failed Everton transfer. Quoted by HLN, Jankovic explained: “A magnificent guy. The way he continued to work during that period when there was a lot around him is exemplary. At training I noticed nothing of what was happening around him. However he received during the trip visits from agents, and stories appeared every day in the press. He is certainly an example for young people and has given a boost to the whole team with his behaviour.” That may not be that, and HLN believe a transfer somewhere is still possible, saying: ‘The withdrawal of Everton certainly does not mean that Belfodil will finish the season at Standard.’ Should Standard miss out on Belgium’s top six, and therefore a play-off place to decide the end of season placements (don’t ask, it’s complicated), then Belfodil, say HLN, will have 2 days to find a new club if he so wishes. Though HLN don’t mention it, it probably can’t be ruled out that Everton could consider a late revival if they fail to land other targets. Belfodil started for Standard against Club Brugge. It didn’t help, they lost 3-0.

Barely a few days after his transfer to Everton collapsed, Standard announce that the striker Ishak Belfodil has signed a new contract. More details on the new agreement have provisionally not yet published. It is the second contract extension in barely three weeks for Belfodil. Belfodil was initially a free agent signing for standard with a one-year contract, and an option for an additional season. That option was early vetoed January, tying the Algerian until the summer of 2018. He has now signed a new contract again, after being offered an upgraded contract by the Red Shirts. The attacker will now get a new contract, and is all the more remarkable given that the attacker only a few days ago was close to a transfer to Everton. The English club offered twelve million, but dropped out in the last minute. Agent reveals Everton's reasons for scrapping Ishak Belfodil transferChristophe Henrotay was brought in to help move deal with Standard Liege along - but Blues pulled outAN agent involved in Everton’s aborted move for Ishak Belfodil claims Ronald Koeman had a sudden change of heart over the player - and Bill Kenwright got “a bit bored”. The Blues looked to be moving in on the Standard Liege forward after tabling a £10.4m offer but Koeman pulled the plug on the transfer. Christophe Henrotay, the representative of Kevin Mirallas and former agent to Romelu Lukaku, was drafted in to help the deal but Everton had a change of heart. Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Henrotay says Kenwright told him: "I want to keep our good relationship, we are going to make a higher bid, but I’ll remember this for next time." The agent then added: "The transfer was put off track, Ronald Koeman suddenly changed his mind, he had something wrongly negative briefed on the player, because Belfodil is an exceptional professional. "Kenwright was a bit bored with the situation because the price now was so high." Liv Echo
