Gethin Jones says Everton Under-23s’ challenge is to maintain their position at the summit of the Premier League 2 table through to the end of the season, ahead of Sunday’s trip to Sunderland. Following their winter break, the Young Blues travel to the North East for a midday kick-off - their first action since the International Premier League Cup meeting with Athletic Bilbao on December 21. The Blues resume their domestic campaign sitting top of the standings having recorded 26 points from their 12 matches. “We had a few hard training sessions after coming back at Christmas, so we are all up to sharpness,” Wales youth international Jones said. “We had two or three days off which was good. I went home to see family and friends. “We came back in over the New Year and since then we have had a ‘mini pre-season’, as David Unsworth has called it. “It’s been a really good first half of the season - we are top of the league and we want to keep that up in the second half of the season.” Kick-off on Sunday at Eppleton Colliery is midday, with live updates provided on the Club’s official website and Twitter account.

Everton Under-23s extended their lead at the top of the Premier League 2 table to five points with a battling 1-0 away win at Sunderland on Sunday.Harry Charsley scored the winning goal on 27 minutes, latching on to Kieran Dowell’s fine slide-rule pass to net with an assured finish. Despite not playing for almost three weeks, David Unsworth’s side picked up from where they left off before Christmas to register their ninth victory of the league season. The win could have been more comprehensive - Calum Dyson and Callum Connolly had chances before the break, and there were further opportunities for Gethin Jones and Dowell in the second half. Mateusz Hewelt was largely untroubled in the Everton goal for most of the game, although he was called upon to make a crucial stop to deny Joel Asoro with a quarter of an hour left and then forced to deal with some more late pressure from the home team. Another positive to take from the game was Matthew Pennington’s comeback from injury. The defender played the opening 45 minutes in what was his first appearance since overcoming a long-term hamstring problem. Everton FC

I hope we don't ruin their season by taking players out of their team that won't get game time.
