On Thursday 2nd July 2020, Everton signed talented French left-back Niels Nkounkou on a free transfer from Ligue 1 giants Olympique de Marseille.

The defender agreed a three-year deal with the Blues.

Nkounkou, who played for Marseille’s B team in 2019/20 having progressed through the club’s youth ranks, was born in Pontoise, a suburb of Paris.

Everton Director of Football, Marcel Brands, believed the teenager would develop with the Blues and learn from the vast experience of senior defenders at the club.

“Niels is a young, talented player with good technical and physical skills,” said Brands. “We have been following him for months.

“Hopefully he can learn a lot from Lucas Digne, as well as Carlo Ancelotti and David Unsworth, and follow the same pathway into the first team the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Mason Holgate have taken in recent years.”

On 31st August 2021, Everton announced that Niels had completed a season-long loan move to Belgian club Standard Liege.

On 27th August 2022, Everton announced that Nkounkou had joined Cardiff City, on loan for the duration of the 2022-23 campaign. However, on 14th January 2023, Everton announced that Nkounkou had been recalled from his loan at Cardiff City and joined French side Saint-Etienne for the remainder of the season.

On 1st June 2023, Everton announced that Niels had joined Saint-Ettienne on a permanent transfer.
